यहूदी परंपराओं ने जो मनुष्य के विकास की कथा लिखी है, वह लाओत्से के हिसाब से बिलकुल ही गलत है। यहूदी धारणा है
कि परमात्मा ने पुरुष को पहले बनाया और फिर पुरुष की ही हड्डी को निकाल कर स्त्री का निर्माण किया। लाओत्से इससे बिलकुल ही उलटा सोेचता है। लाओत्से मानता है, स्त्रैण अस्तित्व प्राथमिक है। पुरुष उससे जन्मता है और उसी में खो जाता है। और लाओत्से की बात में गहराई मालूम पड़ती है।
पहली बात, स्त्री बिना पुरुष के संभव है। उसकी बेचैनी पुरुष के लिए इतनी प्रगाढ़ नहीं है। इसलिए कोई स्त्री चाहे तो जीवन भर
कुंवारी रह सकती है; कुंवारापन भारी नहीं पड़ेगा । लेकिन पुरुष को कुंवारा रखना करीब-करीब असंभव जैसा है। और पुरुष को कुंवारा रखना बहुत आयोजना से हो सकता है। सरल बात नहीं है, सुगम बात नहीं है।
इधर मैं देख कर हैरान हुआ हूं। साधु मुझे मिलते हैं, तो साधुओं की आतंरिक परेशानी कामवासना है; लेकिन साध्वियां मुझे मिलती हैं, तो उनकी आंतरिक परेशानी कामवासना नहीं है। सैकडों साध्वियों से मिलकर मुझे हैरानी का खयाल हुआ कि जो स्त्रियां साधना के जगत में प्रवेश करती हैं, उनकी परेशानी कामवासना नहीं है; लेकिन जो पुरुष साधना के जगत में प्रवेश करते हैं, उनकी परेशानी
कामवासना है। असल में, पुरुष की कामवासना इतनी सक्रिय, इतनी क्षणिक है कि प्रतिपल उसे पीडित करती है और परेशान करती है।
स्त्री की कामवासना इतनी क्षणिक नहीं है, बहुत थिर और बहुत स्थायी है।
पुरुष, किसी गहरे अर्थ में, स्त्री के आस-पास ही घूमता रहता है। चाहे वह कितने ही प्रयास करे यह दिखलाने के कि स्त्री उसके आस-पास घूम रही है, पुरुष ही स्त्री के आस-पास घूमता रहता है। वह चाहे बचपन में अपनी मां के पास भटक रहा हो और
चाहे युवा अवस्था में अपनी पत्नी के आस-पास भटक रहा हो; उसका भटकना स्त्री के आस-पास है। स्त्री के बिना पुरुष एकदम अधूरा है।
स्त्री में एक तरह की पूर्णता है। यह मैं उदाहरण के लिए कह रहा हूं, ताकि स्त्रैण अस्तित्व को समझा जा सके। स्त्रैण अस्तित्व बहुत पूर्ण है, सुडौल है। वर्तुल पूरा है।
लाओत्से कहता है, जितनी ज्यादा पूर्णता हो, उतनी स्थायी होती है। और जितनी ज्यादा अपूर्णता हो, उतनी अस्थायी होती है। इसलिए वह कहता है कि हम जीवन के परम रहस्य को स्त्रैण रहस्य का नाम देते हैं।

Laotse says, the more perfection, the more permanent it is. And the more imperfection, the more temporary it is. Therefore he says that we name the ultimate mystery of life as feminine mystery.
