जीवन बहुत से विरोधी आधारों पर निर्मित होता है। जैसा दिखाई पड़ता है, वैसा ही नहीं; दिखाई पड़ने वाले तत्वों के पीछे न दिखाई
पड़ने वाले तत्व होते हैं, जो बिलकुल ही विपरीत होते हैं।
विपरीत का हमें स्मरण भी नहीं आता। यदि हम जन्म देखते हैं, तो मृत्यु की हमें कोई सूचना नहीं मिलती। और अगर जन्म के क्षण
में कोई मृत्यु का खयाल करे, तो हम उसे पागल कहेंगे। लेकिन जन्म के पीछे मृत्यु छिपी रहती है। और जो जानता है, वह जन्म में मृत्यु को तत्क्षण देख लेता है। ऐसा ही जब कोई मर रहा हो, तो उसकी मरणशय्या के पास खड़े होकर हमें उसके जन्म का कोई भी खयाल नहीं आता।
लेकिन हम मृत्यु के पीछे जन्म की यात्रा शुरू हो जाती है। और जब कोई सुंदर होता है, तो हमने कभी नहीं सोेचा कि कुरूप हो
जाएगा। और जब कोई युवा होता है, तो हमने युवा के सौंदर्य में वार्धक्य के पदचाप नहीं सुने। और जब कोई सफल होता है, तो असफलता निकट है, यह हमारे स्मरण में नहीं आता। और जब कोई राज-सिंहासनों पर प्रतिष्ठित होता है, तो पृथ्वी पर गिर जाने की और धूल-धूसरित हो जाने की घड़ी बहुत निकट है, इसका हमें कोई स्मरण नहीं होता है। जीवन विपरीत को अपने में छिपाए हुए है। इसलिए ज्ञानी वह है जो प्रतिपल विपरीत को भी देखने में समर्थ है। जो जीवन में मृत्यु
को देख लेता है और अंधकार में प्रकाश को और सफलता में असफलता को और सौंदर्य में कुरूप को और जो प्रेम में घृणा के बीज देख लेता है और जो प्रशंसा में निंदा की यात्रा देख लेता है, वही ज्ञानी है।
लाओत्से इस सूत्र में इस विरोध की तरफ सबसे गहयी खबर देता है।

Life is built on many opposing grounds. Not as it appears; Not visible behind visible elements
There are falling elements, which are completely opposite.
We do not even remember the opposite. If we see birth, we do not get any information about death. And if at the moment of birth

But behind us death begins the journey of birth. And when someone is beautiful, we never think that they are ugly

He sees the light in the darkness and the failure in success and the ugly in beauty and who sees the seeds of hatred in love and who sees the journey of condemnation in praise, he is wise.
