प्रकृति बिलकुल ही दया-शुन्य है। चाहे वह प्रकृति पृथ्वी पर प्रकट होती हो और चाहे स्वर्ग-आकाश में, चाहे वह शरीर के तल पर प्रकट होती हो और चाहे आत्मा के तल पर, प्रकृति सदय नहीं है। इसका यह अर्थ आप न लेना कि प्रकृति कठोर है। साधारणतः ऐसा ही समझ में आएगा कि जो दयावान नहीं है, वह क्रूर होगा, कठोर होगा।
नहीं, जो कठोर हो सकता है, वह दयावान भी हो सकता है। जो दयावान होता है, वह कठोर भी हो सकता है। लेकिन प्रकृति दोनों नहीं
है। न तो वह किसी पर दया करती है और न किसी पर कठोर होती है। असल में, प्रकृति आपकी चिंता ही नहीं लेती। आप हैं भी,
आपका अस्तित्व भी है, प्रकृति को इससे भी प्रयोजन नहीं है। कल आप नहीं होंगे, तो आकाश रोएगा नहीं और पृथ्वी आंसू नहीं
गिराएगी। और कल आप नहीं थे, तो पृथ्वी को आपके न होने का कोई पता नहीं था। और आज आप हैं, तो प्रकृति को आपके होने का कोई पता नहीं है।
जब लाओत्से कहता है कि प्रकृति सदय नहीं है, तो वह यह कह रहा है कि व्यर्थ दया की भीख मांगने मत जाना। न जमीन पर दया
मिल सकती है और न आकाश में। हाथ मत जोड़ना किसी मंदिर और मस्जिद के सामने। किसी परमात्मा की प्रार्थना इसलिए मत
करना कि प्रार्थना से कुछ भेद पड़ जाएगा। नहीं, प्रशंसा से कोई भेद न पड़ेगा परमात्मा की तरफ से; स्तुति कुछ फर्क न ला सकेगी,
क्योंकि गालियां भी कोई अंतर नहीं लाती हैं। स्तुति वहीं सार्थक होती है, जहां गालियां भी सार्थक हो सकती हैं। अगर परमात्मा को दी
गई मेरी गाली बेचैन करती हो, तो मेरी स्तुति भी सार्थक हो सकती है। और परमात्मा, अगर मैं प्रार्थना करूं, और नाराज और कठोर हो जाए , तो मेरी स्तुति उसे पिघला सकती है, परसुएड कर सकती है, फुसला सकती है और राजी कर सकती है। अगर परमात्मा को मैं दयावान होने के लिए राजी कर सकता हूं, तो फिर परमात्मा को कठोर होने के लिए भी राजी किया जा सकता है। उस हालत में
परमात्मा परमात्मा नहीं रह जाता, हमारे हाथ की कठपुतली हो जाता है।
