पृथ्वी पर जितने जानने वाले लोग हुए हैं, उन सब में लाओत्से बहुत अद्वितीय है।
कृष्ण की गीता में कोई साधारण बुद्धि का व्यक्ति भी कुछ जोड़ना चाहे तो जोड़ सकता है। महावीर के वचनों में या बुद्ध और
क्राइस्ट के वक्तव्यों में कुछ भी मिश्रित किया जा सकता है। और पता लगाना बहुत कठिन होगा। क्योकि उनके वक्तव्य ऐसे हैं कि
साधारण मनुष्य की नीति और समझ के प्रतिकुल नहीं पड़ते। और इसलिए दुनिया के सभी शास्त्र प्रक्षिप्त हो जाते हैं; इंटरपोलेशन हो जाता है। दूसरी पीढियां उनमें बहुत कुछ जोड़ देती हैं। उन शास्त्रों को शुद्ध रखना असंभव है।
लेकिन लाओत्से की किताब जमीन पर बचने वाली उन थोड़ी सी किताबों में से एक है, जो पूरी तरह शुद्ध है। इसमें कुछ जोड़ा नहीं
जा सकता। न जोड़ने का कारण यह है कि जो लाओत्से कहता है, लाओत्से की हैसियत का व्यक्ति ही उसमें कुछ जोड़ सकता है।

यह वक्तव्य भी ऐसा ही वक्तव्य है। यह आपने कभी भी न सुना होगा कि संत दयावान नहीं होते हैं। संतों के संबंध में जो भी आपने सुना होगा, जरूर ही जाना होगा की वे परम दयालु होते हैं। और लाओत्से कहता है कि संत सदय नहीं होते। इस वक्तव्य में
जोड़ना बहुत मुश्किल है। लाओत्से कहता है कि जैसे घास-निर्मित कुत्तों के साथ हम व्यवहार करते हैं, संत ऐसा ही व्यवहार हमारे
साथ करते हैं। बहुत अजीब सी बात मालूम पड़ती है; इसलिए समझने जैसी बात है। और लाओत्से जितनी भलीभांति संतों को जानता है, शामद ही कोई और जानता हो। असल में, हम संतों के संबंध में जो कहते हैं, वह हमारी समझ है। और लाओत्से जो संतों के संबंध
में कह रहा है, वह संतों की समझ है।
