प्रतिबिंब कहने का अर्थ यह है कि सत्य जिस माध्यम में प्रतिफलित होगा, वह माध्यम बहुत कुछ कर जाएगा; उसकी
जिम्मेवारी सत्य की नहीं है। लेकिन हम माध्यम में ही सत्य को जान सकते हैं।
एक माध्यम है अहंकार। अहंकार अंधेरे जैसा माध्यम है। जैसे अंधेरे में कोई सत्य को जाने, कुछ जान नहीं पाता, टटोल भी नहीं पाता: ग्रोपिंग इन दि डार्क–अंधेये में । फिर भी हम अंधेरे में भी सत्य के बाबत बातें तय कर लेते हैं। कुछ पता नहीं होता, फिर भी हम तय कर लेते हैं। लोग बातें कर रहे हैं: आत्मा है,ईश्वर है, नर्क है, मोक्ष है, स्वर्ग है। वे सब अंधेरे में बातें कर रहे हैं। उन्हें कुछ पता नहीं है।
स्वर्ग कितना महत्वपूर्ण मालूम पड़ने लगता है मन को! मोक्ष की बड़ी आकांक्षा होने लगती है। सत्य को पाने की बड़ी वासनाएं जगने
लगती हैं। बिना कुछ साफ़ हुए कि किस चीज को…सब अंधेरे में हैं। अंधेरे में आंख बंद करके सपना देखने लगते हैं। अहंकार अंधेरे जैसा है। उसमें जो सत्य हम बनाते हैं, बिलकुल मनोकल्पित हैं। अपने ही भीतर निर्मित है, उनका सत्य से कुछ लेना-देना नहीं है।
अस्मिता प्रकाश जैसी है। लेकिन अस्मिता के प्रकाश में भी जो सत्य दिखाई पड़ते हैं, वह भी प्रतिफलन से ज्यादा नहीं हैं। वह भी
रिफ्लेक्शंस हैं। जहां न अहंकार रह जाता और न अस्मिता, जहां मैं बचता ही नहीं हूं, वहीं वह जाना जाता है, जो प्रतिबिंब नहीं है, स्वयं है। लेकिन तब कहने वाला नहीं होता।
