लाओत्से से कोई पूछे अगर कि तूने कभी किसी पाप का प्रायश्चित किया है ? तो लाओत्से कहेगा, नहीं, क्योंकि मुझे पता नहीं पाप क्या है। यह नहीं की मैंने पाप न किया हो। लाओत्से कहता है, मुझे पता नहीं कि पाप क्या है। कोई लाओत्से से पूछे की तूने पुण्य किए ,बहुत उसके फल पाएगा! लाओत्से कहता है की नहीं, मुझे पता नहीं की पुण्य क्या है; फल मिल भी सकते हैं, मुझे पता नहीं। मैंने लेखा-जोखा नहीं रखा,मैंने हिसाब नहीं रखा। जो सहज मुझसे हुआ है, वह मैंने किया है। न कभी पछताया और न कभी आत्म-प्रशंसा में अपनी पीठ ठोकी। वे दोनों काम मैंने नहीं किए हैं।
