लाओत्से कहता है, परम श्रेष्ठता तो वह है, जो अनायास, जल के सदृश्य, उन स्थानों को खोज लेती है, जिन स्थानों में जाने के
लिए हम कभी भी राजी न हों, जिनकी हमारे मन में बड़ी निंदा है।
―जल की महानता हितैषणा में निहित है और उस विनम्रता में, जिसके कारण वह अनायास ऐसे निम्नतम स्थान ग्रहण करता है, जिनकी हम निंदा करते हैं। इसलिए तो जल का स्वभाव ताओ के निकट है।’
लाओत्से कहता है, ताओ का अर्थ है धर्म। ताओ का अर्थ है स्वभाव। ताओ का अर्थ है स्वरूप। जीवन का जो परम नियम है, उसका नाम है ताओ। लाओत्से कहता है, जल की यह व्यवस्था ठीक ताओ के निकट है। ताओ को उपलब्ध व्यक्ति भी इसी तरह, सर्वोत्कृष्ट व्यक्ति भी इसी तरह नीेेचे, पीछे और दूर हट जाता है। छाया में, जहां उसे कोई देखे भी नहीं। भीड़ की अंतिम कतार में, जहां कोई
संघर्ष न हो। और जब भी कोई वहां मौजूद हो, तब वह पीछे हटता चला जाता है।
दो तरह के लोग हैं: आगे बढ़ते हुए लोग और पीछे हटते हुए लोग। पीछे हटते हुए लोग कभी-कभी पैदा होते हैं। कभी कोई बुद्ध,
कभी कोई लाओत्से, कभी कोई क्राइस्ट। आगे बढ़ते हुए लोगों की बड़ी भीड़ है।
