लाओत्से यह कहता है कि श्रेष्ठता व्यक्ति की निजता में होती है। उसकी उपलब्धियों में नही, उसके स्वभाव में । क्या उसके पास है,
इसमें नही; क्या वह है, इसमें । उसके पजेशंस में नहीं, उसकी संपदाओं में नहीं; स्व्यं उसमें ही श्रेष्ठता निवास करती है। लेकिन इस श्रेष्ठता को नापने का हमारे पास क्या होगा उपाय ? धन को हम नाप सकते हैं, कितना है। पद की ऊंचाई नापी जा सकती है। त्याग कितना किया, नापा जा सकता है। ज्ञान कितना है, प्रमाणपत्र हो सकते हैं। सम्मान कितना है, लोगों से पूछा जा सकता है। आदमी भला है या बुरा है, गवाह खोजे जा सकते हैं। लेकिन निजता की श्रेष्ठता के लिए क्या होगा प्रमाणपत्र ?
अगर कोई बाह्य कारण से व्यक्ति श्रेष्ठ नहीं होता… और नहीं होता है, लाओत्से ठीक कहता है। सच तो यह है कि जो लोग भी बाह्य श्रेष्ठता खोजते हैं, वे निकृष्ट लोग होते हैं। जब कोई व्यक्ति धन में अपनी श्रेष्ठता खोजता है, तो एक बात तो तय हो जाती है कि स्व्यं में श्रेष्ठता उसे नहीं मिलती है। जब कोई राजनीतिक पद में खोजता है, तो एक बात तय हो जाती है कि निज की मनुष्यता में उसे श्रेष्ठता नहीं मिलती है। श्रेष्ठता जब भी कोई वाह्य खोजता है, तो भीतर उसे श्रेष्ठता से विपरीत अनुभव हो रहा है, इसकी खबर देता है।

Witnesses can be found if the man is good or bad. But what will be the certificate for privacy superiority?
If a person is not superior for any external reason… and does not happen, Lao Tzu is right. The truth is that those who seek external superiority are inferior people. When a person discovers his superiority in wealth, one thing is certain that he does not get superiority in himself. When one searches in a political position, one thing is certain that he does not get the superiority of his own humanity. Whenever someone seeks externality, he is experiencing the opposite of superiority within, he gives news of it.
