श्रेष्ठता का आवास कहां है?
साधारणत: जब भी हम सोेचते हैं, कोई व्यक्ति श्रेष्ठ है, तो हम सोेचते हैं उसके पद के कारण, उसके धन के कारण, उसके यश के कारण। लेकिन सदा ही हमारे कारण, उस व्यक्ति के बाहर होते हैं। यदि पद छिन जाए , धन छिन जाए , यश छिन जाए , तो उस व्यक्ति की श्रेष्ठता भी छिन जाती है।
लाओत्से कहता है, जो श्रेष्ठता छिन सके, उसे हम श्रेष्ठता न कहेंगे। और जो श्रेष्ठता किसी बाह्य वस्तुओं पर निर्भर करती हो, वह उस वस्तु की श्रेष्ठता होगी, व्यक्ति की नहीं। अगर मेरे पास धन है, इसलिए श्रेष्ठ हूं, तो वह श्रेष्ठता धन की है, मेरी नहीं। मेरे पास पद है; वह श्रेष्ठता पद की है, मेरी नहीं। मेरे पास ऐसा कुछ भी हो जिसके कारण मैं श्रेष्ठ हूं, तो वह मेरी श्रेष्ठता नहीं है। अकारण ही अगर मैं श्रेष्ठ हूं, तो ही मैं श्रेष्ठ हूं।

Where is the residence of superiority?
Normally whenever we think, a person is superior, we think because of his position, because of his wealth, because of his fame. But our reasons are always outside that person. If the position is snuffed out, money is taken away, fame is lost, then that person's superiority is also taken away.
Lao Tzu says, whoever can take away the superiority, we will not call it superiority. And the superiority which depends on any external things, it will be the superiority of that object, not the person. If I have wealth, therefore I am superior, then that superiority is of wealth, not mine. I have a position; She is of superiority, not mine. If I have anything that makes me superior, then that is not my superiority. Because of this, if I am superior, then only I am superior.
