ज्ञानी निष्क्रिय भाव से अपने कार्यों की व्यवस्था तथा निःशब्द द्वारा अपने सिद्धांतों का संप्रेषण करते हैं। इसके बाद के सूत्र
में लाओत्से कहता है, ―सभी बातें अपने आप घटत होती हैं।’
ताओ के आधारभूत सिद्धांतों में एक यह है: सभी बातें अपने आप घटित होती हैं। ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है, जिससे घटित करने के लिए हमारी जरूरत होती हो; हमारे बिना ही सब कुछ घटित होता है। नींद आती है, भूख लगती है, जन्म होता है, मृत्यु होती है, यह सब अपने आप घटित होता है।
लेकिन जो अपने आप घटित होता है, उसे भी हम मान कर चलते हैं की हम घटित करते हैं। लाओत्से की दृष्टि में सबसे बड़ी भ्रांति मनुष्य की यही है कि जो घटित होता है, उसका वह कर्ता बन जाता है। जो घटित होता है, उसका कर्ता बन जाना ही बड़े से बड़ा अज्ञान है।
